Idle watching Idol
September 3rd 2008 17:19
Australian Idol time again. I'd like nothing more than to pretend that I'm blissfully disinterested but something about it makes me breathe fire.
It is so difficult not to see at least a preview of the so called talent whether caught out in the midst of channel flicking, interrupted by it in the adbreak of another program or confronted with it thanks to television malfunction (They made a mistake when they installed the digital black box for our TV, Our TV now has a mind of it's own and changes it's own channels)
I loathe overexaggeration, over confidance and mediocrity(The ok praised up as fantastic dragging down the standards of great). These are three things that make me fume and Australian Idol is steeped in them. Yet I'm drawn towards despite knowing it is going to both upset me and waste my time.
My imagination is captured by the concept of having that opportunity to create ones image and express oneself completely. I've always seen songs as something I could immerse myself in when I feel out of tune with the world. Like a blanket of understanding I can wrap myself in. The lyrics express what I can only find screams of frustration to say and I feel less alone knowing that the singer must have been in a similar place.
Idol always disappoints me because all the emotion of a song is shallow or exploited past the point of meaningfulness. The songs are always dreary the same word repeated over and over like there is something inspirational to be worshipped in it when it is usually only "Baby" or "love".
The whole situation is further cheapened by the reported sex appeal of the contestants, Are the screaming girls hired or does everyone just lack intelligence ( The wardrobe department certainly does).
If it were Elvis or Harry Connick Jr I'd leave allowances but most of these people look like they just rolled out of bed and so ordinary. I struggle to see all the time what the judges are going on about and I wish they had access to the copyright for some better music or that it was a competition for singer/songwriters and they had to write their own (although I guess that could be more painful)
I'm just so weary of it and the bombardment of shallow hype has only just begun.
