The Simpsons Movie(-length episode?)

For almost two decades, millions of fans of the show have been begging for a movie. Now that the moment is upon us, I’ve found myself wondering if all those fans will be disappointed to find a 90-minute episode on the big screen.
Since, it seems, most people who are interested will see the movie as soon as it opens – almost every opening screening at cinemas in Sydney have been sold out for weeks – I don’t think I’ll have to wait long for a response. I may have to wait a while to see the movie myself however, seeing as I didn’t book tickets weeks in advance like most fans.
If all these sessions are sold out, surely the opening weekend box office revenues will suggest the movie will be very profitable. I don’t think the financial success of the film will need to rely on these numbers alone, however. Simpsons fans are people who have followed the show for years, people who have so much faith in the franchise that they will pay for a ticket to see the film before it even opens. I’m thinking these people are going to be satisfied with an average Simpsons episode produced for the big screen. Which is fair enough. The show has maintained high standards of quality for three times as long as the longest running sitcoms, and continues to make viewers of all ages laugh, and even make some of us think.
The critics are starting to have their say now, piece by piece as the media screenings have come and gone. The worst thing I have heard is that it isn’t quite enough to make you roll around on the floor in stitches. I think it will make some people do just that anyway.
Come the weekend, though, I’m going to make my way to a cinema and go see “The Simpsons Movie” (in 2D – that cracks me up!) because I still love the show and think that even a feature-length episode up on the big screen will be worth the price of the ticket.
